I have been trying to get fingerprint reader to work ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 last year. The first issue: when I try to scan my fingerprint in the Simplepass program, I click which finger and scan but nothing happens. Clearly, the program does not work with Windows 10.
I then saw this same Q on another forum and they had a link to download simplepass update, which I did. It would not install. I even went to the actual HP site to download the latest simplepass upgrade but it still does not work.
While installing, I get the following error message "Please uninstall Authentec fingerprint software then try to install again." I looked in my entire computer, via search, control panel, uninstall programs, etc. and there is no such program on my computer.
Anyone else have this problem and a possible solution? Much appreciated!

There are (still) two Series of HP SimplePass around:
Series 6 - any version of the HP SimplePass program written by the AuthenTec company (absorbed by Apple some time back)
Series 8 - any version 8.x (and beyond) of the HP SimplePass program written (and supported) by Softex
It sounds like you were using an older version of the HP SimplePass software, likely any 6.x version of the older AuthenTec HP SimplePass program suite.
Unfortunately, the older code is no longer compatible with Windows 10.
Create a Restore Point
Before you make changes to your computer, create a Restore Point to provide a "way back" to your current setup.
- Stop all programs: Browsers, games, Applications
- Control Panel > icon view > System > System Protection >
Click (Highlight) your main disk (C) > Select Create a Restore Point
Uninstall existing HP SimplePass program
Uninstall HP SimplePass (any version 6.x or previous)
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features
After the uninstall completes, Restart the computer and log in
Validity / Synaptics Finger Print Driver
You will need to find / install a compatible fingerprint reader Driver that is compatible with your computer and with Windows 10.
Sounds harder than it is, fortunately.
Start by knowing (finding) your Biometric Hardware IDs for your fingerprint reader:
Windows key + X > M (opens Device Manager) >
Open / Click Biometric Devices
Right-Click Biometric Adapter >
Select Properties >
Tab Details > Under Property
Select "Hardware Ids" from the drop-down menu
Open your computer's Website Support Driver Page
Check in Windows 10 driver list for a compatible driver. If none are found, Change the OS to Windows 8.1 (or 😎 and search again. The point is to ensure your installed Validity Driver is (best) rated for Windows 10 or -- almost as good -- rated for Windows 8.x
Check the version of the driver in your Driver support page against the version of the driver listed in the Device Manager. If the installed Driver is out of date, download and install the new(er) driver.
If you cannot find any Driver listed in your computer's Website Support Driver pages, you can look for one in the Dragon document referenced later in this Post.
If you install a (new) driver, Restart the computer and log in.
Windows 10 requires that you set / assign a PIN number to enable the fingerprint reader.
Additionally, in almost all cases, you must have the Windows 10 fingerprint logon set up and working before you add in the HP SimplePass program.
PIN assignment is mandatory to enable fingerprint reader:
Windows key > Settings > Account > Sign-in Options > PIN number
- Windows Hello and the Windows fingerprint logon
HP SimplePass Installation
Download the latest version of the Series 8 HP SimplePass program.
At writing, latest version is:
- Download and save latest program onto your computer
- Double click on the downloaded package to install the software
- Restart the computer after the software is installed to "apply" the new program
