Synaptics granular controls MIA

HP Recommended
Envy x360 13-ay0055cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP's acceptance of Microsoft's "Precision Touchpad" control basically abandons the granular control we would have if the Synaptics trackpad had its software exposed to the user, so to speak. There's no setting for momentum or speed (although some posts advise using the mouse scroll wheel settings - though that doesn't work properly).

Searching the web revealed that altering the "friction" and "inertia" Registry setting (lowering friction to 2, don't recall what I set "inertia" to) makes two-finger scrolling much more efficient (read: less laborious). This resolves the major issue I had with this machine. I was getting ready to return it as defective. (Minor issues remain but, as soon as I can expunge the HP & MS bloatware, it should be fine.)

But it's not defective hardware nor would there even be any issues with this Synaptics touchpad if HP would have just provided the choice to disable the "Precision Touchpad" driver provided by Microsoft and, instead, permitted the use of the Synaptics native driver. Synaptics provides all of Apple's touchpads (trackpads, in Mac parlance) and they are uniformly excellent. The funny thing is that they do not provide any momentum adjustment and yet Mac trackpads provide proper momentum as is. (There are 3rd-party drivers that do permit such adjustment if the user desires.) Here, though, in the x360 Envy, it's actually painful to use the touchpad.

So the bottom line is that HP, by abdicating control of the touchpad to Microsoft, is actually crippling  their otherwise excellent notebooks. The product managers responsible for this decision should all be taken out behind the building and whipped mercilessly.
