I just bought an HP Pavilion AU035NL. I would like to install the Ubuntu operating system without giving up Windows 10. Can I make the partition or should I install a virtual machine?

Welcome to the HP Support forum.
You can do both - as per your wish.
Ubuntu and Win 8/10 dual boot > http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2015/11/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-alongside.html
Oracle's VirtualBox > https://www.virtualbox.org/
If you choose the dual boot option, please ensure you back up your important files and create a system image before starting the process as it might be a bit more complicated than using the VM/VB. If you are not an avid Linux user but just want to use Ubuntu from time to time, best would be to use the virtual PC solution (easier, faster, safer with less risk to mess up something during the process).
Hope this answers your query.
