HP ENVY 17 Laptop PC
Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to dual boot windows with ubuntu 20.04 lts. I have specifically asked customer support that I have bought the laptop for this reason.

I am following these steps here 1 except that I used Rufus to create a bootable USB drive because for some reason Balena was not working for me.

The problem as you can see pics that I do not see the unallocated free space when trying to install ubuntu even though I have allocated free space? And I also do not see the install ubuntu alongside Windows boot!

What are those? and what would happen if I processed with installation?

/dev/nvmeOn1

or

/dev/nvme1n1

I'm sorry, but HP does not provide support for Linux distros -- including boot and installation issues.

IF you replace the preloaded Windows OS with a Linux distro, or add a Linux distro, then you assume full responsibility for maintaining that -- including solving any problems with booting the other OS and/or installing the other OS.

Modern PCs with UEFI, instead of the older BIOS, are especially difficult to install because you have to go into the UEFI settings and make several changes before you can even boot from a USB stick -- and we are unable to assist in that work.

Your best bet for support now is to contact the support forum of the distro you are using.

Since you are using Ubuntu, go here: https://ubuntuforums.org/

Good Luck

I would be interested to know how you get on with this. I personally am looking at an Envy for Linux however I would not myself dual boot it - rather have it dedicated to Linux only. Is this a possibility for you or do you really need to have Windoze too?

Alternatively, have you tried a different distro, such as Linux Mint? I have had great success on my HP ProBooks with Mint though I appreciate it is not the same hadrware in the Envy.

Also, I see that the installer is not detecting the existing OS and so not offering the dual boot setup, so this is as far as I see the real issue. e.g.

"Make sure that you have turned off quick startup in Windows and do a full shutdown by holding shift when you click shutdown to disable quick startup. If you dont do this, the Windows partition cannot be mounted by linux to see that there is a Windows partition."

Windows 10 Fast Start is one of the many bad things Microsoft have released. We turn it off on every computer we deploy.
