Hi @Jan1035,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering an error message stating that the file format or file extension is not valid when trying to save an Excel file, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check the File Extension

Ensure that the file extension matches the format you're saving the file in. For instance, if you're saving as an Excel Workbook, the extension should be .xlsx for newer versions or .xls for older versions.

2. Rename the File

Sometimes, special characters or excessively long file names can cause issues. Try renaming the file with a shorter name and without special characters (e.g., avoid characters like /\?%*:|"<>.).

3. Save in a Different Location

Try saving the file to a different location on your computer. If you're trying to save to a network drive, try saving it to your local drive instead. This can help determine if the issue is with the file path or permissions.

4. Check for Corruption

The workbook you're trying to save might be corrupted. To check this, try creating a new Excel file and copying the content from the old file to the new one, then attempt to save again.

5. Save in a Different Format

Try saving the file in a different format (e.g., CSV, XLS, XLSX) to see if the issue persists across different file types. This can help identify if the problem is specific to a particular file format.

6. Update Excel

Ensure your Excel application is up to date. Microsoft often releases updates to fix bugs and improve compatibility. Check for any available updates and install them.

7. Repair Excel

If the issue persists, there might be a problem with your Excel installation. You can try repairing Excel through the Control Panel (or the Settings app in newer versions of Windows). Go to "Programs and Features," find Microsoft Office (or Excel), and select "Change" or "Repair."

8. Disable Add-ins

Sometimes, add-ins can cause issues with Excel. Try disabling them to see if that resolves the problem. You can do this by going to File > Options > Add-ins in Excel, then manage your add-ins and disable them temporarily.

9. Use Excel's Open and Repair Feature

If the problem is with opening an Excel file rather than saving it, try using Excel's "Open and Repair" feature. This can be found by clicking "Open" in Excel, browsing to the file, clicking the small arrow next to the Open button, and selecting "Open and Repair."

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
