I am trying to have 2 external monitors besides my laptop screen for homework/research. I'm not sure if my video card/motherboard supports this action. I can successfully extend my viewing onto an external monitor using the either the HDMI port "OR" the usb 3.1 type c gen 1 port, but not both simultaneously. I did successfully get both external monitors functioning at one time, but the 2nd external monitor was somewhat grainy and unstable. My video card updates are up-to-date. Please help!!!!

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

After reading your post, I did go through the Product specifications of your product and found that you have AMD Radeon™ R5 Graphics card installed on the PC.

And it supports dual monitor setup, click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04641829 to configure dual monitor setup.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you, I have already successfully added another monitor which is taking advantage of the "dual-monitor" setup; however, my initial question was whether I can add "2" additional external monitors (besides the laptop screen) to this laptop. I have extended my viewing onto an external monitor using the HDMI port, but am unable to use the USB type C port at the same time for the 2nd external monitor. Or visa-versa. If I use the USB type C connection, my laptop won't allow me to extend to another monitor using the HDMI. If I use a splitter, I can use both external monitors, but they are both mirrored images of each other.

Thank you for posting back. back.

To get the answer to this question, you can not connect two monitors using the HDMI port.

Computers and TVs have a wide variety of video connection types. The video connection on your computer must match the connection on your TV or monitor.

NOTE: If your PC only has DVI and your TV does not have a DVI port, you can use a special adapter or converter cable.

Keep me posted!
