HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f2000 (74R51AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I installed the ELAN Touch Firmware for HP Spectre 16 x360.  But it seems the firmware update failed.

When starting up it shows the windows loading screen (with the rotating circle).

After that it remains black.

I can only work when connecting a external monitor.

I tried to rerun the ELAN Touch Firmware Update, but it always shows failed:

Hi @Thamos,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the firmware update for your HP Spectre 16 x360's ELAN touch controller didn't go as planned, and now you're experiencing issues with your screen. Here's a step-by-step approach to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

1. Basic Checks and Troubleshooting

  • External Monitor Functionality: Since the laptop works with an external monitor, this indicates that the main hardware components (like the GPU) are functioning but suggests that there might be a problem with the internal display or its connection to the motherboard.
  • Safe Mode: Try booting into Windows Safe Mode. If the display works in Safe Mode, it might be a driver issue.
    • Restart your computer and press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) as it boots to enter the Advanced Boot Options menu.
    • Select "Safe Mode" and see if the internal display works.

2. Reverting the Firmware Update

  • System Restore: Use System Restore to revert your system to a previous state before the firmware update was applied.
    • Access System Restore by typing System Restore in the Windows search bar and following the prompts to select a restore point before the firmware update.

3. Fixing the Firmware Update

  • Retry the Firmware Update: It looks like the firmware update failed and needs to be reapplied. Ensure you're using the correct firmware version for your specific model.
    • Download the latest firmware from the HP support website for your specific model.
    • Follow the installation instructions carefully. Ensure the laptop is plugged into power during the update.

4. Check Configuration and Reinstall Drivers

  • Display Drivers: Reinstall the graphics and touch panel drivers.
    • Go to Device Manager (devmgmt.msc in the Windows Run dialog).
    • Under "Display adapters" and “Human Interface Devices,” find the drivers related to your display and touchscreen. Right-click and choose "Uninstall device."
    • Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest drivers for your model.

5. BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Check BIOS/UEFI Settings: Sometimes, display settings in the BIOS/UEFI might cause issues.
    • Access the BIOS/UEFI by pressing F10 (or Esc followed by F10) during startup.
    • Look for any display-related settings that might have been altered, and try defaulting to the original settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
