HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Have HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx0066ur and HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx0092ur

All of them goes to blue screen if connected to HDMI monitor with USB Type-C to HDMI cable and have turned on option "Turn off the display" in Power Options.

Tried several cables, even with  HP USB Type-C - HDMI 2.0, 2PC54AA adapter.

How to reproduce:

  1. Connect monitor with USB Type-C - HDMI cable,
  2. set "Turn of the display" in Power Options after 1 minute when Plugged in.
  3. Wait until system will turn of your screen.
  4. Try to wake up and wait until screen will turn of again.
  5. On second or third cycle Windows goes to Blus Screen with PowerManagement root cause.
  6. System does not reboot automatically and always need cold restart through power button.

Even after full restart it is required to unplug cable and plug again to make it working.

As remedy solution: disable monitor turn off in Power Options if  USB Type-C port used for monitor connection.

The specs of your 15-cx0066ur is:

     https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06067588

which has one USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge) port.

and  5-cx0092ur is

    https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06191243

which has one USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data transfer only, up to 5 Gb/s) port

They do not support Alt mode therefore USB-C - HDMI cable won't work.. Both have HDMI port therefore the simplest option is to use HDMI - HDMI connection.

Regards.

Why they do not support video output over USB-C if it is clearly written in spec for USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1?

May be it will be surpise for you, but it works and must work. Unfortunately not properly with PowerManagement settings.
