Hello,  can I attach 2 monitors to my laptop?

One in the HDMI cable, and the other one in VGA?

I have WIndows 7 and HP g42-469LA

It is an old machine buy it has 2 video out ports, you can use 1 HDMI monitor and 1 VGA (native, no conversion) monitor

So I tried it, and the 2 monitors work but the laptop gets black.

It looks like I can not have the: laptop and 2 monitors. Would be 3 screens in total. Only 2.
Only 2 monitors at the same time (laptop + 1 monitor) or (2 monitors but laptop gets black)

Is this correct or I am doing something wrong?
