Microsoft Windows 11

Why can I connect a second display via a docking station to my 14-ew1008ca laptop, not to my 15-dy1028ca? Display not detected! My screen  (HP w2207) has a VGA connector and USB port.

Hi @Carminep,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Connecting a second display to your HP Notebook 15 can sometimes be tricky, especially if the display uses a VGA connector and the laptop lacks a VGA port. Let's troubleshoot the issue step by step.

Check the Docking Station Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the docking station you are using is compatible with your HP Notebook 15. Some docking stations have specific compatibility requirements.

Use the Correct Adapter:

  • If your HP Notebook 15 does not have a VGA port, you will need a VGA to HDMI/USB-C adapter (depending on the available ports on your laptop).
  • Make sure the adapter is correctly connected to the docking station and the display.

Connect Directly:

  • If possible, try connecting the VGA monitor directly to the laptop using a VGA to HDMI or VGA to USB-C adapter, bypassing the docking station to see if the issue lies with the docking station.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that all display drivers and docking station drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP support website.

Check Display Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display and see if the second display is detected. If not, click on Detect to force the laptop to search for external displays.

Check Display Inputs:

  • Make sure the monitor is set to the correct input source (VGA).

Test the Docking Station:

  • Try using the docking station with another laptop to see if it works. This will help determine if the docking station itself is functioning properly.

Check Cables and Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables and connections are secure and that there are no damaged cables.

Power Cycle:

  • Sometimes, simply restarting your laptop and monitor can resolve connectivity issues.

BIOS Update:

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS can resolve hardware compatibility issues. Check the HP support website for BIOS updates for your HP Notebook 15.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
