Difficulty projecting to second screen via HDMI

I'm trying to get my Pavilion laptop to connect to a second monitor screen via the USB-c port

I have tried a straight HDMI-USBc wire, and also tried a USBc-HDMI adaptor which would allow me to connect with a two sided HDMI lead. This didn't work, and then I bought the USBc-HDMI adaptor that was made for my laptop (linked below) in order to connect. I'm still having no success. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this problem? My laptop is only a few months old so there shouldn't be any system problems.

The specs of your machine is

It has   1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge) port which does not support Alt mode therefore USB-C to HDMI cable won't work.

Thanks for your help. Looking at the specs for the adaptor you shared, it also says that DP-alt mode compatibility is required. I'm reluctant to continue buying adaptors on a trial and error basis in the hope that one of them will work. Is there any known way to get around the DP-alt mode compatibility, perhaps purchasing an adaptor that's specifically designed for this problem, or finding some sort of driver that can add DP-alt to my device? Alternatively I have two standard USBa ports on my device, could I potentially get a USBa-HDMI adaptor that would work for this port and solve the problem that way?

For anyone reading this with a similar problem, the situation was resolved by bypassing the USB-C port and going for a simple HDMI-USB3.0 adaptor. This is your standard USB port that you get on USB drives and use to connect most portable devices to a laptop/computer. I understand that this is a fairly generic solution that works for most laptops (no alt-mode required), though if you're looking to project to a television rather than a monitor, you may need something a bit more heavy duty to carry HD transmissions and sound signals. When I plugged the adaptor in, I had to install some software and drivers to make it work but it was reasonably self explanatory. All good now.
