Hi,

As the title describes the screen of my HP laptop just starts flickering randomly any time. Sometime it would stop after a few minutes other times it would do it continuously. To stop it I need to put my laptop to sleep.

Can you please tell me what the issue is and how to stop it?

Thank you

Hardik

@JohnnyGat (from Saints Row? Pleasure to meet you, finally) 😉

Here's what you need to do, to identify the issue and resolve it accordingly:

  • If not done already, check if it works fine on the BIOS screen to identify if it's either a hardware or a software issue:
    • If it works fine on the BIOS (Accessed while tapping F10 during a restart) it's a software issue & I suggest creating a new user account to check if that works better, for starters)
    • However, if it doesn't work within the BIOS either, I'm afraid it's a hardware malfunction.

While you respond to that, I have a few more steps that should help:

Perform a power reset (no data loss) using these steps: Click here, proceed to next step if this works

Attempt to run a test from the HP hardware diagnostic tool, using this link: Click here for details.

If the issue appears on the diagnostics, it could again, determine a hardware failure,

If they don't appear on bios & the hardware tests passed: please update the BIOS & Chip-set drivers from the HP website using this link: Click here

if the issue persists, reinstall windows using the recovery partition or the recovery media to fix the issue,
use this link for details on performing the recovery: Click here

I couldn't test if it was working in BIOS as well but one thing I found out was that whenever the display flicked the fan would make loud noises. So I guess it is a hardware issue.

@JohnnyGat What do you mean you couldn't? Is it not going into the BIOS screen? Could you elaborate?

Also, for the fan noise: click here to resolve the issue, using the steps mentioned in it.

I couldn't find the issue into the bios screen also now the fan is making constant vibrating noise and sound.

@JohnnyGat

Thank you for posting back.

  • Have you tried checking the display flickering on a external monitor?
  • Have you tried updating the system softwre and drivers?

Refer to Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers for detailed instruction to update the drivers.

If you've done all the troubleshooting steps and if the issue persits. I would request you to reach out to our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/

I tried updating the bios using the software update provided by HP. It seems to have reduced the noise of the fan. But I can't say so for the display flickering. Since I don't have any another display I can't check for it. Also it is quite random so there is a very low chance that I would get the result instantly.
