I've used an external HDMI monitor with this laptop for years via USB-C.  Last night it stopped working.  I've tried various USB-C adapters, and they all work just fine if I plug into the USB-C connection on my phone.  However, my laptop displays: "Display connection might be limited" with description "Make sure the DisplayPort device you're connecting to is supported by your PC."  Odd since I'm using HDMI, but that message started showing up right after it stopped working.

This thread seems to be the identical problem: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/display-connection-might-be-limited-i...

Unfortunately it doesn't appear  that there was ever a resolution and the thread is now closed.  I have tried all troubleshooting steps in that thread including updating drivers, installing all Windows updates, etc.  I really need to figure this out to get my external display working again.
