Recently, my HP Pavilion's touchpad/trackpad has really started acting up.

Sometimes, for no reason, it starts going much slower than it otherwise would, which usually leads to it locking up with it going all over the place whenever I move my mouse and making random  clicks all over the place for at least 10 seconds afterwords.

I've tried everything. I've wiped down my touchpad (seemed to work for a little bit, didn't), I've downloaded updates to drivers and computers (didn't even make a dent), I've even completely uninstalled and reinstalled my laptop touchpad driver, all while restarting pretty regularly.

Nothing works! I'm going crazy! My touchpad just randomly decides that it's just not going to work with me sometimes, and I have no idea what to do except for get a new one, which I really don't wanna do. I have so tried using an external mouse, it still behaves the same

@ChandaRC7, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’ve already tried the most common troubleshooting steps, but since the problem persists—even with an external mouse—that strongly suggests the issue isn’t with the touchpad hardware itself, but something deeper: either a system-level software issue, driver conflict, or potentially hardware interference on the motherboard level.

Let’s walk through some advanced troubleshooting options:

Confirm the Issue Happens in Safe Mode

Boot into Windows Safe Mode:

  • Hold Shift and click Restart from the login or Start menu.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

In Safe Mode, only basic drivers load. If the pointer behaves normally here, it’s likely a software conflict or background app (like touchpad enhancement software, HP utilities, antivirus, etc.).

Disable All Startup Programs and Services

To isolate background conflicts:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, press Enter.
  • Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all startup items.
  • Reboot and test.

If the issue goes away, re-enable items one at a time to find the culprit.

Disable HP-Specific Drivers or Utilities Temporarily

Sometimes HP’s "enhancement" drivers or software (like HP SimplePass, HP Quick Launch, or Synaptics custom gestures) can cause pointer bugs.

  • Go to Device Manager > Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click anything labeled Synaptics, HID-compliant touchpad, or HP-specific—disable them one at a time and test with external mouse only.

If external mouse works fine now, the problem lies in the touchpad hardware or driver.

BIOS/UEFI Update and Reset

Corrupt or outdated firmware could affect input responsiveness.

Visit HP official support page for your model and ensure you're using the latest BIOS version.

Enter BIOS (tap Esc or F10 while booting) and choose "Load Setup Defaults", then Save & Exit.

Memory and Disk Health Check

Pointer lag and erratic behavior can sometimes be caused by hardware instability.

RAM Test: Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and run the memory diagnostic tool.

Disk Health:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter.
  • Type Y and restart the PC.

Clean Boot + Fresh Windows User Profile

  • Create a new local user account via Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Add someone else.
  • Log in with the new account and see if the pointer behaves better.

If yes: your original user profile is corrupted.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
