HP laptop screen randomly gets flickering lines

HP Stream Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I just got a new HP laptop in October and a couple days ago as I'm online reading the screen randomly blacks out with a bunch of white and grayish horizontal lines probably like 6 rows of them all over the screen and itd flicker so the lines move randomly. Whenever it does that I cant see anything else but the black screen and lines. Its happened a few times since and happening more frequently. This is a new laptop that Ive barely used so I really hope I can get it fixed. I have McAfee protection and I've checked a few times and it says everythings good theres no virus.

HP laptop screen randomly gets flickering lines

Hi @CarissaMarie,

Thanks for stopping by the HP forums. I hope you enjoy your experience! 🙂 It is a terrific place to find answers and tips and to get the best from the community.

I reviewed the post about the computer having display issues. It will be a genuine pleasure to assist you here. 🙂

Stupendous diagnosis and great analysis of the situation. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Please provide the complete model# of the unit.
  • Does it have an HDMI port?
  • Did this happen after a software or windows update? Do you remember?

For starters, please do this. If the computer has ah HDMI cable, please hook it up to an external TV and check it flickers.

If it does, then please update the bios, chipset and display drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers and follow the on-screen instructions and check again.

If it does not, then there is a hardware issue with the computer screen or its display cables and the unit needs to be serviced at the repair center. Please contact HP phone support in this regard.

Please follow these steps.

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately. As the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of repairs.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

HP laptop screen randomly gets flickering lines

The model is 11-y020wm it does have a hdmi port when it froze again I hooked it up to my tv but nothing was showing so I may of done it wrong I'll try it again. I believe it started after the last update I did. When I last updated it I did the update before it shut down and it was acting kind of weird like the update wasnt installed when it shut off. When it first froze I shut it down and when I turned it back on it said that it was doing an update and installing it so I let it do its own thing and ever since its been randomly freezing with the lines all over. Yesterday though it just froze and I could see the screen but nothing was working. If it helps next time I can take a picture of it on my phone and post it?

HP laptop screen randomly gets flickering lines

Hi @CarissaMarie,

I reviewed the post and would like to inform you that you've done some great troubleshooting.  If this occurrence is in the recent past, then you could try a system restore to an earlier time before the issue started and check if it resolves the issue. I think it should as you state it started before the last update.

Link for system restore: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03327545 Please follow the steps in the option: "Restore your computer when Windows starts normally"
