Hi Wes,

Welcome to the HP Forum.

General Guide:

What are the F1 through F12 keys

To see what your computer has to say about the keys:

  • Start > type / search for “help and support” > click to open Help and Support
  • Enter search keyword “keyboard”
  • Click to Open “Keyboard Shortcuts”

  • Note that it may be necessary to press the FN key and the function key.
  • Keyboards are not all alike - your model may have different characteristics.
  • Some keyboards can be set so you do not have to use the FN key with the function key.

Lid Options

You can check / adjust the setting for Power Options to control what the computer does when the lid is closed.  You can set the notebook to "do nothing" when you close the lid; this option allows you to connect to an external display, close the lid, and use the external display only.

Windows 7

  • Start > Control Panel > set icon view > Power Options  > Choose what closing the lid does

Windows 8

  • To see all power settings:

Start Screen (Windows key) > type anywhere on the screen "power" (no quotes) >

Click "settings" (on the right side of the screen) >>
From the Selection of options showing on the screen, Select / Click on "Change what closing the lid does"

  • Shorter:

Start Screen > type "lid" > Click "Settings" >> Select "Change what closing the lid does"

and how do I get my QUESTION MARK BACK ?
fn + tab?

Your quick response for other info was greatly appreciated
Thanks Wes

How you "get back the question mark" probably depends on how the key is responding, if at all.

For Example, you may have the Language set to other than English -- perhaps French, which causes the keyboard to use a different character set.

Windows 8

Windows key +X > P (Opens Control Panel) > set icon view > Language >

If English (or your favorite language) is not showing, then > Select 'Add a language' >

Scroll down on the language page and select your language >

If English (or your favorite language) is showing but you do not see the results you expect, then >

  Select "Advanced Settings" >

Under "Override input method" > Select from the drop down menu the language you wish to use

  OPTIONAL (on same page)  >>

Scroll down... Under "Web Content" > Select / CHECK "Don't let websites access my language list..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows 7 (and XP)

See the following Post:

My question mark key does not work

Excerpted from that Post:

By Rob D >>

Go to control panel (Start>Control Panel on Windows XP) and double click Regional and Language Settings. (Click "switch to classic view" at the top left if you don't see the icon)

Then click the Languages tab, then the Details button. From here you can remove irrelevant keyboard layouts, and add the one you want.

You may be able to use this guide to help:

If the question mark does not respond at all, then you might try issuing a Power Reset:

Forced Power Reset

Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset

The Power Reset cannot tell the difference between drivers - it does not analyze a driver or software program before applying it.  It assumes all the drivers and software on your computer belong there.

This is a Driver Reset; this is NOT the Windows 8 Reset that installs the Operating System.  This procedure does not wipe out your files nor does it destroy your Windows setup in any way.

EXAMPLE:

  • If the driver software on disk is incorrect or if the driver software is corrupt, it will still be incorrect or corrupted after the Reset.
  • If the driver INSTRUCTIONS are tangled, messed up, or there are bits missing from those instructions, then the Reset may fix the problem.

Why a Power Reset works to fix some issues:

The Power Reset does not install anything on your computer, the Power / Hard Reset does not remove programs or personal data from your computer, and the Power Reset does not change the settings on your computer.  Your data and programs remain as they were before the reset was applied.  The Reset drains out the old program instructions from the memory and forces the computer go to the on disk Operating System to get new instructions.

Why a Power Reset might Not Work:

If the issue is more than just entanglement, if the "good instructions" on the computer are not good enough -- that is, you need an update, a new driver, or there is a problem that cannot be "untangled", then the Reset will not work.

If there is a hardware problem the Power Reset will not work.

I hope this helps.
