HP Spectre x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-eu0000 (7K633AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I bought the laptop about a year ago so since I needed a new one and I knew I would have math heavy units in future so this made sense since I could write everything electronically as access anywhere. Anyways long story short now that I am using it a lot more the pen have just started writing stuff before i even make contact with the screen leaving behind a mess of handwriting. It is genuinely so annoying and every time i do the stupid diagnostics like "update the system, restart the laptop" none of it works. It fixes itself for maybe 2 minutes then goes right back to being a nightmare to use. If anyone can help m figure out a fix for this it would be great.

Hi @ViShawn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out — it sounds like your HP Spectre x360 14 is experiencing pen hover or ghost touch issues, where the stylus registers input before actually touching the screen. This is a frustrating issue, especially when you're relying on the pen for schoolwork or notetaking.

Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide specific to your device and issue:

1. Confirm the Basics

Check the Pen Tip (Nib):

  • If the nib is worn down, broken, or loose, it can cause phantom input.
  • Try replacing the tip with a new one (your pen may have shipped with spares).
  • Make sure the pen is an HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen, which is the compatible one for this model.

2. Recharge or Replace Pen Battery

  • A low battery can cause erratic pen behavior.
  • Fully charge the pen.
  • If your pen uses a replaceable AAAA battery, try changing it.

3. Clean the Screen

  • Wipe down the screen with a microfiber cloth. Oils and smudges can interfere with digitizer sensitivity.

4. Calibrate and Reset Pen Settings

a) Calibrate Touch Input:

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings
  • Click Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input
  • Choose Pen input > follow the instructions

b) Reset Pen and Touch Settings

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink
  • Set “Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen” to On
  • Under Handwriting input, try resetting to defaults

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
