Is my laptop overheating and do I need to do something about it? When I went to use it after 12+ hours of non use, the base was hot even though I could hear the fan in the background. The screen was blank and it would not start up. I unplugged it and waited until it had cooled down before it would turn on. It seems ok now but it is still quite warm after 15 minutes of use.

The default action when you shut down a modern laptop is some form of hybrid sleep -- in which it stays powered on and generates heat as a result. If you want it powered off, you have to go into Control Pan (not Settings) and look at the power options and set them to shutdown the laptop.
