Is this malware or a scam? How do I know?

  • When did the pop‑up first appear (after startup, while using a specific app, etc.)?
  • Does it look like a Windows notification, or more like a separate installer window?

Here are a few steps you can try right away:

  1. Check HP Support Assistant – Open the HP Support Assistant app (preinstalled on most HP devices) and see if it lists any pending updates. If the update is genuine, it should appear there.
  2. Verify in Windows Settings – Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and confirm whether “HP Display Control” is listed. If it is, updates should come through HP or Microsoft directly.
  3. Run Windows Security Scan – Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a quick scan to rule out malware.
  4. Download from Official Source – If you do need HP Display Control, only install or update it from the official HP website or through Microsoft Store not from a pop‑up link.
