hp notebook-17

Received a HP COMPUTER for Christmas. Turned on my computer today and home screen flickered then became "washed out" , very pale.  Checked brightness keys, didn't help.  I can go to other screens but the washed out colors on screen don't change.  As an elderly disabled lady without ANY computer savvy, I don't know where to start and I'm afraid to touch anything.

Thinking of taking it to Best Buy or some place like that but I don't know if they will honor the warranty.  Can anyone give me any bit of advice?  I could call HP  support but I wouldn't even know what were talking about.  Please, can you give me some advice.?

Thank you for your response.  Unfortunately, as I have mentioned in my original message, I am elderly and totally ignorant in the workings of a computer.  This is just not my generation.  Just reading your suggestions totally confused me.  But thank you again for attempting to aid me with this problem.  I must look elseware.
