I have a roommate that says his laptop somehow got wet inside and now wont turn on. When he presses the power button, a tiny light on the button blinks once and thats it. He tried using a hair dryer to dry off the motherboard as best as he could.

Hi @hellfireboi80,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be some water damage causing the issue. Even if you tried to dry it with a hair dryer, there could still be lingering moisture causing a short circuit or other problems. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and possibly fix the issue.

  • Remove the Battery: If possible, remove the battery from the laptop to prevent any potential damage from a short circuit.
  • Disconnect Power: Make sure the laptop is completely disconnected from any power source, including the charger.
  • Let it Dry: Leave the laptop in a dry, warm place for at least 24-48 hours. You can try using a desiccant like rice or silica gel to absorb moisture.
  • Inspect for Damage: After it's thoroughly dried, inspect the laptop for any visible signs of damage, such as corrosion on the motherboard or other components.
  • Reassemble and Test: After ensuring it's dry and there's no visible damage, reassemble the laptop and try turning it on again.
  • Check Power Adapter: If the issue persists, try using a different power adapter or charger to rule out any issues with the power source.

Keep in mind that water damage can be unpredictable, and even if the laptop appears to be working initially after drying, there could still be long-term effects on its functionality. It's essential to act quickly and thoroughly dry the laptop to minimize potential damage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
