Hi,

My laptop has always worked with an HDMI cable with no issue. Two days ago the laptop updated and since then it doesn't connect to the TV. I have checked all the settings e.g. control panel - display etc. The TV does not show up.

We've checked the HDMI cable with another laptop and it works. The laptop hasn't been dropped or even moved over the last few days so I can't see how it could have been physically damaged. Really need a solution for this!

thanks

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Let's perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also, you can try this:
Right-click on display. Once you plug in the HDMI to TV and check for setting under audio which says enable/disable video, inside the control panel, uncheck it.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi,

that didn’t help. Got a friend to restore the setting/ but it’s happened again - why are the updates affecting the hdmi port - surely this is a problem?!

This sounds like updates are conflicting the display graphic driver, let check for any damage driver installed.

In Device Manager, locate the device display adapter, If you see the yellow exclamation mark right click on it and update the driver or select roll back driver. Once it's done restart your computer and check for the issue.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi,

There isnt an exclamation mark, it says it's fully up-to-date. This is the second time this has happened. A friend of mine managed to fix it last time by uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. But surely I shouldnt have to do this every time the computer updates?!

Your very correct, you shouldn't be doing this over and over, however, It sounds like software driver related issue.

I would recommend performing system factory reset will take care of this and other drivers related issue.

Note: please back up your files and data before initiating system factory reset,

.To perform a Reset, follow these steps: (windows 8 )

  1. Go to Settings either by swiping in from the right edge of the screen or by pointing the mouse in the upper-right corner of the screen so that the Settings panel appears
  2. Click Change PC Settings
  3. Click Update and recovery
  4. Click Recovery
  5. Under the Remove everything and reinstall Windows section, click Get started
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
