Pavilion 15-CW1xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this laptop brand new less than two weeks ago and I am very disappointed with the built-in camera. Skype calls are so bad that anybody I talk to complains that the image is very fuzzy and the colours are blending. I get very good images from my end of the call. I have tried to tweak the camera resolution but I get very little, if any, improvement. It is so bad I wonder if it would be possible - or worth it to - upgrade the camera.

Welcome to the HP support community.

You might need to uninstall the webcam driver.

To do this, open Device Manager > right-click on the device > select Properties > switch to Driver tab > click on the Uninstall Device button.

Restart your computer and then open Device Manager again and click on Action > Scan for hardware changes. (this would automatically reinstall the best drivers for it)

Once done, I suggest you install all the latest pending Windows updates as below and check if it helps.

  1. Go to “settings” and click on “update and security”.
  2. Under tab “Windows update”, click on the icon “check for updates”.
  3. Then once you find the pending updates install it and check.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

I hope that helps.

Hi. I must mention that I really appreciate your quick response to my question. Thank you.

However I followed your advice to the letter and the camera is still exactly the same. So I took my laptop to Currys PC World Tech Experts and they had a look at it too. They had no success either. I was told that it was a known issue with these laptops. Mine is less than two weeks old and I use it for Skype and WhatsApp video calling. To make my conversations more comfortable I have bought a webcam. I may at some stage - after Covid-19 goes away - look into the feasibility of replacing the built-in camera with a better spec one.

Thanks again though as your advice has been filed away for future reference. 😁
