About 2 weeks ago, my touchscreen and audio suddenly stopped working. I have checked Device Manager and the I2C HID Device has a yellow warning, and says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware.

Please contact the system manufacturer for further assistance.

I also seem to have two I2C HID Device's, but only 1 of them isn't working. Either way, my touch screen and audio have stopped working at the same time.
I have tried all possible "simple" solutions that have been suggested online, such as disabling, enabling, uninstalling, updating etc. When I try and update the I2C HID device, it says it is unable to.
I believe it is a hardware error (although I don't even know what that actually means). But when I tried to carry out a Component Test in the BIOS (i think it is called that), the touch screen option wasn't even there. So it appears my laptop no longe recognises it has touch screen at all anymore.
My device also says: "No pen or touch input is available for this display", again suggesting that it has just completely removed touch screen or something?

And for some weird reason, the audio has stopped working at the exact same time (even though I don't think touch screen and audio are related).

I encountered this same issue about two months ago, but I managed to fix it (however I have forgotten how I actually did it), but now I can no longer fix it. Also, I think it is a more serious issue now, as no matter what I do I can't fix it.

I genuinely don't know what to do anymore, so I need some help.

Hi @duds123

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the touchscreen and audio have both stopped working, and you’re seeing a Code 10 error for the I2C HID Device. Thank you for sharing the details of what you’ve already tried.

Since the issue affects multiple components and the BIOS test no longer even shows the touchscreen option, it’s important we proceed with recommended steps only.

Confirm BIOS and Firmware

  • Restart the PC and press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Under System Information, check if the touchscreen is listed. If it is missing, this indicates the system firmware is not detecting the hardware.
  • Ensure the BIOS is updated to the latest version for your model. You can download the update from HP’s official support site:
    HP Software and Driver Downloads

Run HP App – Diagnose & Fix

  • Open the HP App from Windows.
  • Select Diagnose & Fix.
  • Run a full system check to identify hardware or driver issues. This tool will automatically repair or guide you if a component is not responding.

Driver Reinstallation

  • In Device Manager, uninstall the I2C HID Device showing the error.
  • Restart the PC. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  • If it does not reinstall correctly, download the latest drivers for your model from HP’s support page (same link above). Focus on Chipset, Input Device, and Audio drivers.

System Reset (HP App)

  • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > HP App > Advanced Options > Reset.
  • This clears any corrupted configuration and reinstalls the HP App components needed for Diagnose & Fix.

Hardware Validation

  • If after BIOS update and Diagnose & Fix the touchscreen and audio remain undetected, this strongly suggests a hardware‑level fault. Since both devices failed at the same time, it may involve the system board or I2C controller.
  • At this stage, the HP App will confirm if service is required.

You can start with the BIOS update and HP App Diagnose & Fix, as these are the most direct ways to determine whether the issue is software or hardware.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

This didn't work! I believe it's a hardware error, because it seems my laptop no longer detects it even has touchscreen (even though it should do!). What should I do now?

Both the audio and touchscreen aren't working 😞
