Touchpad is all over the place randomly, have to disable it and use a mouse.

Microsoft Windows Vista

The mouse cursor is either restricted to just moving vertically up and down or it randomly moves itself all over the place. NOT a virus or malware causing it, I've checked it thoroughly.

Is it fixable or do I have to get another complete palm rest and touch pad part? Which of course would be used and possibly have the same failure.

Just got done putting it back together from taking the keyboard and display off to tighten all the hinge screws. The right hinge inside the lid was just about to come loose completely. Now it's nearly tight as new.

While I had it apart I disconnected and reconnected the touch pad cable, hoping it might just be a bad connection there. No change.

What is the full model name, product number of your laptop?

Well you can try reinstalling touchpad driver and updating BIOS.

Disable touchpad, follow this: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01876141

Neither is the problem, both already updated to the latest.

Then your option is to first try factory reset (assuming recovery partition is intact or you've HP Recovery USB with you)

And next change touchpad hardware.
