Trying to determine if I have alternate mode on USB-C to allow using an adapter to connect 2 hdmi monitors in extended display mode. Technical specifications are cryptic at best but it appears I only can use USB-C for data transfer...

It is a CTO machine therefore we do not have it specs but for the Envy 17-u0xx series, machines only have following ports (page 2 of the Maintenance and Service Guide):
- Audio-in (mono microphone)/audio-out (stereo headphone) combination
- AC Smart Pin adapter plug
- HDMI v1.4 supporting up to 1920×1080 @ 60 Hz
- RJ-45 network
- USB 3.0 ports (3)
- USB 3.0 port Type-C
That means the USB-C port works similar to other USB-A ports except its shape. If you wish to have 2 or more external monitors, please enter your requirement on the following link and it will find for you few options on market today including some HP products:

or try following HP docks
