Can  I use a usb-c to display port adapter which does not require a thunderbolt port to connect an external monitor to my laptop?

The USB-C port on your machine actually is  an USB 3.1 Gen 1 port with Type-C connector which does not support USB DisplayPort Alternate Mode for transmitting audio/video

 

 I don't think it is going to work on your machine.
