I understand that you have display issues with your laptop.
Please check if the issue persists in BIOS. If the issue persists in BIOS it is a hardware issue.
If you don't see the issue in BIOS. Please update the display drivers from the link below.
Since your unit went with windows vista I can only find drivers for windows vista.
You can try installing HP software updates. This should automatically download the correct drivers for your laptop.
Note: only if the drivers are available.
