Sometimes when I close the lid of my laptop and later open it again, my cursor suddenly moves much slower than before, and I have to drag across my touchpad many times to move it where I want. When I plug in a mouse, the cursor moves as expected for the mouse only. Eventually, the problem will go away by itself, until it returns randomly. Restarting the computer doesn't help. What can I do about this?

Hi @slickpea,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the touchpad settings on your HP Pavilion are occasionally reverting or being altered when you close and open the laptop lid. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue.
Update Touchpad Drivers
Ensure your touchpad drivers are up-to-date. Outdated or corrupt drivers can cause erratic behavior.
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest touchpad drivers for your specific model.
- You can also update drivers through Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Find "Mice and other pointing devices" and expand it.
- Right-click your touchpad device and select "Update driver."
- Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."
Check Touchpad Settings
Sometimes, the touchpad settings may change unexpectedly. You can check and adjust these settings:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
- Ensure that the touchpad sensitivity and other settings are configured to your preference.
- You might also want to check the advanced touchpad settings. This can usually be accessed through a dedicated touchpad application (e.g., Synaptics, ELAN) found in the Control Panel or by right-clicking the touchpad icon in the system tray.
Disable Power Management for the Touchpad
Power management settings might be causing the touchpad to behave differently after the laptop wakes up.
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Find "Mice and other pointing devices" and expand it.
- Right-click your touchpad device and select "Properties."
- Go to the "Power Management" tab.
- Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Reinstall Touchpad Driver
Reinstalling the driver can sometimes fix persistent issues.
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Find "Mice and other pointing devices" and expand it.
- Right-click your touchpad device and select "Uninstall device."
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the touchpad driver.
BIOS/UEFI Update
Updating your BIOS/UEFI can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.
- Go to the HP Support website and check if there is a BIOS update available for your model.
- Follow the instructions provided on the website to update your BIOS.
Adjust Lid Closing Actions
Changing the power settings related to closing the lid might help if the issue is triggered by the lid closing action.
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click on "Choose what closing the lid does."
- Adjust the settings to "Do nothing" for both "On battery" and "Plugged in" (just for troubleshooting; you might want to revert these settings later).
Check for Windows Updates
Ensure your operating system is up-to-date as updates often include fixes for known issues.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install any that are available.
Run HP Diagnostics
HP laptops often come with built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify and fix hardware issues.
- Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly as it boots up to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run the diagnostics for the touchpad and follow any recommendations provided.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the issue with your touchpad's sensitivity.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
