I've been using my HDMI port with a HDMI->VHS adaptor for about a year with no issues
Driver is AMD Radeon HD 8610G
two days ago I took my laptop to a meeting, then when I returned home I plugged in the HDMI cable as normal and could not get the second display to work
I've reinstalled the driver mentioned above
I've replaced the HDMI->VHS adaptor
I've tested with another HP monitor
I've tested this monitor with another computer and it works fine
I've shutdown, removed battery, held on button on the laptop
I've shutdown unplugged and held on button on Monitor
I've tried several other sequences of startup
I've used the Project image to extend, duplicate, second screen only etc..
I've checked status of HDMI port in devices, it says it is working fine......
any help would be appreciated to get my dual monitor setup working again

Welcome to the HP Forums :)
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand the HDMI port suddenly stopped working with the extra display,
No worries as I'd love to help, however, I need a few more details to provide an accurate solution:
As it had been working fine previously, it's possible a certain update changed the settings/preferences, have you attempted a system restore? if not please do.
Also, change automatic updates to manual windows updates to ensure you know what you are installing into your PC.
I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer
Let me know how that pans out,
If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

I did as you suggested, recovered, which reset windows, and wiped out ALL MY APPLICATIONS, so now I have to REINSTALL EVERYTHING I USE.
I also did the stop and reset to defaults on the monitor as you requested,
But the monitor still does not work.
I need further steps, and I want to get this fixed ASAP so I can start reinstalling my apps ....
I do count on this computer for work for multiple organizations I volunteer for.
thanks in advance

Thank you for the update,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
I understand your situation and I'd love nothing more than getting the dual display working again, at the moment
However, considering the circumstances, it looks like the port isn't working and requires a hardware repair/replacement.
I recommend you contact HP as the port could be the cause of the failure since the cable is working on another monitor:
Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number to obtain a case along with the phone number.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts,

And click on the Purple Thumbs up icon at the bottom of my comment.
