spectre x360 pen

HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Model: Spectre X360 ae013dx.

OS: Windows 10 (have had all versions from 1803 up to current, just reformatted to stock to test & windows forced update back to current).

Pen: stock- SPen HP-02 ; purchased- Bamboo Ink Plus.

Purchased laptop refurb in 2018. Purchased Bamboo Ink within the last year.

The bamboo ink worked great for a while (even not using bluetooth) but now the lines skip. The tip crosshair is steady when HOVERING within the detection distance, but making contact it blinks like the input is rapidly in&out. The lines/dots correspond to the blinks.

Interestingly, I can manage to draw a full, solid line if I hold the pen at an extreme angle (maybe 30degrees?). I can also draw normally using a finger, so I assumed it isn't an issue with the screen/digitizer.

I've done a lot of troubleshooting (reformatting, rolling back OS, BIOS, drivers updates+rollbacks, different combinations of removing certain devices/drivers, tested different programs, etc.) for like 4 days straight now. The bamboo is definitely charged and is definitely on the correct protocol setting.

Given that it works at an angle and I've seen alot of other users confused about models right before and right after the spectres shipped with Tilt capability and the number of similar or identical pens HP shipped with, it seems like its almost inverted normal and tilt positioning. Some internal comm confusion since the tilt drivers are pushed and so many devices are tied to the pen support system.

Hoping someone has some insight on how I can get it working again.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I appreciate your efforts to try and isolate the issue.

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629
