Hi @ejm9043,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, simply restarting your laptop can resolve temporary touchpad issues.

Check the TouchPad On/Off Button: Ensure that the touchpad isn’t turned off accidentally. Many HP laptops have a touchpad on/off button. Double-tap the top-left corner of the touchpad to enable it.

TouchPad Settings: Verify the touchpad settings.

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your laptop’s icon and select Mouse settings.
  • Check that the touchpad is enabled.

Update or Reinstall TouchPad Driver:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
  • Find Mice and other pointing devices, expand it, and right-click your touchpad device, then select Update driver.
  • If updating doesn’t work, you can try uninstalling the driver and then restarting the laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Sometimes, certain power settings can interfere with the touchpad functionality.
    • Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
    • Select Change plan settings for the selected power plan.
    • Click Change advanced power settings.
    • Under USB settings, make sure USB selective suspend setting is disabled.

Hardware Diagnostic:

  • HP provides diagnostic tools to identify hardware issues.
    • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly to open the Startup Menu.
    • Select F2 to open System Diagnostics and run the Component Tests for the touchpad.

I hope this helps.
