Trying to download a 20minute recording from a Sony camcorder to my laptop via usb port and cable. Have downloaded the file but only audio playing in windows media player and I can't find a reason why. I'm not technical at all so help would be very gratefully received.

Windows Media Player is the worst media player out there, so I am not surprised it does not work. Videos use CODECs to encode the video and audio stream and the MS product doesn't even support the popular codecs.
Instead, you should use VideoLAN Media Player (VLC) as that is what most folks use -- and you can get it from here: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
