My laptop won't show my 5G network in the list of available wifi networks. I have done some troubleshooting on my own, updated the driver, and also tried to change my preferred band in the properties of the wireless network adapter, but the "preferred band" isn't even listed. How do I get the 5G network to show up so I can connect the laptop to the 5G network?

The specs of your machine is

   https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c03770522

It ONLY has  Intel 2x2 802.11b/g/n WLAN Bluetooth with WiDi with Intel Smart Connect Technology adapter. With 802.11b/g/n standard, it can not see 5.0 GHz networks.

Your machine was built early 2014 therefore due to the whitelist, the chance to upgrate to newer wifi card to support 5.0GHz in very slim to none. Options

(a) Allow wifi router to broadcast dual bands    or

(b) Use USB adapter, for example

         https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Networking/Adapters/67965-USB-AC53-NANO

There are many models and brands around, cheaper too

Regards.

Hi, @AlisonH21

If you want to upgrade the internal wifi adapter to a dual band model, you can install this one and it will work just fine.

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0    HP Part # 710661-001

You can find the card on eBay.

Search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi adapter.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the wifi card removal and replacement procedure.
