Hi I have a pavilion dv5 laptop purchased in 2010. I want to make sure I just need a new battery or more assistance. For the past year the battery won’t charge and I keep it on the charger when in use. But if I accidentally unplug it, it takes several tries to turn it back on.

@Riah90 I have a few steps listed below that should help you resolve this concern:

Unplug the charge, Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:

1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.

2) Expand “Batteries”.

3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

4) Click on “Uninstall”.

5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver

6) Shutdown the computer.

7) Remove the battery for a minute and then put it back in. (Skip this step if you have a non removable battery)

8 - When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.

9) Go to Device Manager.

10) Expand Batteries.

11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

If the issue persists, run a battery and adapter test using the steps mentioned in this link: Click here

And get back to me with the results.

Just now seeing this message. I unplugged my laptop yesterday to move it into another room and now it won’t power on properly. It comes on but the screen is blank and the power button flashes. I’ve unplugged the adaptor and taken the battery out but still the same outcome.

@Riah90 I suggest you try with another wall outlet or another adapter, to check if that helps,

Also, Let's perform a power reset as per HP standards:

  • Ensure your laptop is OFF.
  • Unplug all the external devices (If any).
  • Disconnect the power charger from the computer, and remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
  • Connect the power supply (power adapter).
  • Press the power button to turn on your laptop.
  • Then put your battery back.

Thank you, that worked but does this mean I need a new battery?

HP Recommended

@Riah90 That depends, perhaps, you could tell me exactly what worked, as there were multiple steps I had suggest in the post,

And once i know what helped, I can provide an accurate answer to your query.

It worked when I removed the battery and charger; held the power button for 30 secs then plugged in the charger press the power button and then put the battery back in.

@Riah90 That's awesome, although, does that mean the issue is now resolved? If not, we'll do everything we can to get this sorted,
