Can the Pavilion g7 connect to 5g wifi?

Can the Pavilion g7 connect to 5g wifi? If so, what steps do I need to take to do this? Right now, it only recognizes my 2g wifi signal.

I am relatively new to maintaining this laptop, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi:

I don't know of any HP g7 model that can. 

They all came with single band (2.4 GHz) wifi cards.

You would have to use a dual band USB wifi adapter if you want to connect to the 5.0 GHz wifi band.

If you let me know the full model number or product number of your notebook, there were a couple of later models in the series where you might be able to replace the internal wifi card with a dual band one.

It would have to be a g7-22xx or g7-23xx model.

Use this guide for how to find the model number/product number of your notebook...please do not post the serial number.

You're very welcome.

Since you have the last edition of the model series, a dual band card has a good chance of working in your model.

I cannot 100% guarantee it will work, but if you are willing to risk a few bucks on the greater odds of it working, I recommend this model wifi adapter. 

Broadcom BCM943228HMB 802.11abgn 2×2 Wi-Fi Adapter, Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter   HP part # 730668-001.

You should be able to find this card in used but tested and working condition on eBay.

Search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card...

If you are not willing to risk $12 - $15 on it, or the card doesn't work for some reason (though I believe it will), you will have to buy a dual band USB wifi adapter.

Below is the link to the W8.1 wifi and bluetooth drivers for that model wifi card.  Download and save them first before replacing the card, because I am not sure that W8.1 natively has the drivers for this model wifi adapter.

Before installing the replacement wifi card, go to the device manager, click to expand the Network Adapters device manager category, right click on the Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi adapter listed there.

Select Uninstall and also check the uninstall driver box.

Shut down  and unplug the PC from the A/C adapter, remove the battery and install the replacement wifi adapter.
