HP 14
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

i bought a  HP 14" Laptop with a Ryzen 3-3200U processor, the laptop has a Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11b/g/n/ac (1x1)(19a) Wi-Fi card. so i received the laptop yesterday and was immediately disappointed with the wifi connectivity. I contacted HP support through chat and we updated windows, BIOs drivers and check the settings and things are still no better. They did suggest i get a external dual band wifi adapter.

My question is will with help or work? My issue is i have very poor wifi signal to my new laptop. i have tried 3 different wifi networks so i know its not the network and i have also check multiple devices. i have to be sitting right next to the modem/router to have signal even with this i still drop signal from time to time. If i move away from the router 10 feet i get weak signal if i go 15 ft i completely lose connectivity. With my phone, ipad and 10 year old hp i have wifi signal all over the house. Why is this new laptop so different. Is it a hardware issue or some software issue that im missing. Thanks

@jraines17 Greetings from the HP Community!

Did you try reinstalling the wireless adapter? (please do, if you haven't)

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

  1. Remove All Barriers: Certain building materials can get in the way of weaker signals like Bluetooth. Metal, bulletproof glass, concrete and plaster are particularly bad, and marble, plaster and brick aren’t great easy. So if you’re really struggling with interference, your first step should be to move your Bluetooth devices away from these materials. That means no brick walls between you and your devices, and definitely no metal desks!

  2. Change Router Channel: If you have an Apple router and you’re constantly getting interference with your WiFi, try rebooting it. Upon restart, the station will search for a new channel. Specifically, a different channel than the one your Bluetooth devices are using to communicate. If you don’t have an Apple router, you may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.

  3. Move Closer to Your Router: If you often find that you’re getting interference when talking on a wireless headset while on a WiFi call (you’ll know because you’ll hear static), try moving closer to your router. This will give you a more robust WiFi connection, so the Bluetooth frequency can’t overpower it.

  4. Get Away From Microwaves and Fluorescent Lighting: Both emit frequencies of 2.4GHz, and moving away from them will distance you from the source.

That said, The best way to resolve the issue is by using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

I’ll give this a try today been very busy with work. However I have tried all 4 steps below moving closer does work but I have to literally sitting beside the router when I move away more than 10 feet I lose signal. When I uninstall the internal wireless card do I need software to reinstall or will it just do so.

also on a second thought I did find a work around I have an external Netgear usb WiFi adapter if I plug it in and run it’s software the computer works fine.

There is no software is not required. Just you have to update the drivers.
