The parts list for your notebook indicates that it does not come with a WWAN (mobile broadband) adapter, so inserting a SIM card in the slot will serve no purpose.
You would have to make sure the antenna wires are there to add a WWAN card and order one of the WWAN adapters listed in chapter 3 of your notebook's service manual in order to have mobile broadband capability.
