I have the x360 and frequently switch between using it as a tablet to write on with a stylus and back to regular laptop mode. However, sometimes when I flip it back into laptop mode the keyboard is stuck in a “command mode”. For example when I press the H key it’ll bring up history instead of typing H. The only way ive been able to fix it is restarting my laptop every time. is there any way to turn this function off to prevent it from happening at all or turn it off without restarting my computer

@hokelbo2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Pavilion x360!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your laptop might be interpreting certain key presses as shortcuts or commands when you're in tablet mode. This can happen if certain features like Tablet Mode or specific keyboard shortcuts are enabled in Windows. Here's what you can do to prevent the keyboard from getting stuck in "command mode" and avoid restarting each time:

Disable Tablet Mode (if not needed)

If you're primarily using your laptop in laptop mode, disabling Tablet Mode might help:

  • Go to Settings > System > Tablet.
  • Under When I use this device as a tablet, select Don't ask me and don't switch.
  • This will stop Windows from automatically switching to Tablet Mode and might prevent the keyboard from interpreting keys as commands.

Turn off Windows Key Shortcuts

Windows has several key shortcuts (such as the Windows + H key combination for voice typing, or Windows + I for opening settings) that can be triggered by accident in tablet mode. To turn them off:

  • Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
  • Scroll down to the Sticky Keys section and make sure it's turned off.
  • Also, check the Use the On-Screen Keyboard option and make sure it's disabled.

Disable Tablet Mode Keyboard Shortcuts

Sometimes, certain key functions like history (when pressing H) could be due to keyboard shortcuts in tablet mode.

  • Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards and see if there is a specific setting or driver that can be adjusted for tablet mode.
  • You can also check the HP Control Panel (or similar software on your laptop) for any specific keyboard settings that could be causing the issue.

Disable "Hot Keys" or "Special Function Keys"

  • Some laptops have hot keys (e.g., HP Quick Launch Buttons or HP Jumpstart), which can be triggered in tablet mode.
  • Look for software like HP Quick Launch or HP System Event Utility, and try disabling or adjusting the hotkey settings.

Test the Keyboard in Safe Mode

If the issue persists, you can check whether it's related to a third-party software or a driver by starting in Safe Mode:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • In the Boot tab, select Safe boot and restart.
  • Test the keyboard functionality in Safe Mode to see if the issue still occurs.

Recalibrate the Touchscreen (if needed)

Sometimes, the tablet mode misinterprets touch input.

  • Open Control Panel and search for Tablet PC Settings.
  • Click Calibrate under the Display tab and follow the instructions to recalibrate the screen.

Let me know how it goes, and if it’s still an issue, we can try a few more advanced solutions!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
