3 months to the day that we bought the laptop, it suddenly would not connect to any wifi network. I ran through all the steps of the online HP Virtual Assistant and could not get it to work. I even did a full factory reset of the OS. Still didn't work.
In the end, I had to call in to the HP Tech Support line and go through that. The support person was helpful. In the end, what worked was to do this:
shutdown the laptop and remove the power cord
press down on the power button and F6 at the same time for 10 seconds (this is a hard reset)
press the power button and then tap on the ESC key until the diagnostic menu appears
