I just purchased a used HP 2000.  I connected the the internet cable from from my hp to my router. I have not used a hard wired PC in years.  Nothing happens when I connect and Fix Network Problems doesn’t help.  How do access the router/internet with this machine?

At the bare minimum you need to have the ethernet interface configured for an IP address, netmask. You need to have a default gateway defined and you need a DNS server defined.

Open a cmd prompt and run:

ipconfig /all

look for the ethernet interface in the list and for:

DHCP enabled

Autoconfig enabled

IPv4 address   192.168.1.xxx                   for most routers

subnet mask  255.255.255.0

default gateway 192.168.1.1                your router

DHCP server   192.168.1.1                    your router

If you don't see that for the ethernet interface you need to check to see if DHCP is configured for that interface. It will vary based on the OS version on that laptop. If it was upgraded to Windows 10:

Go to Settings - Network & internet - Status - change adapter options - Rt clk Ethernet2 - properties

Double clk Internet Protocol ver 4 (tcp/ip) properties

Make sure these are checked; Obtain IP address automatically.   Obtain DNS server address automatically.

You can also run the Diagnose option when you rt clk on the Ethernet2 adapter.

For other OS (Win 7 or 8), just google how do I check to see if DHCP in enabled.
