Hp 4510 printer
iOS

My current and  previous hp printer stays connected to my network but the hp smart app will not stay connected. I can unplug the printer and plug it back in and it works fine for a few hours. Then the app shows the printer is not connected.

There are four different printers that identify as "hp 4510".

Selected  HP ENVY 4510 All-in-One Printer series for the purpose of answering the question.

This printer requires a 2.4GHz connection to the network ( Specifications

If your router and other devices support both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bandwidth,

make sure the router is broadcasting on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz with separate SSID names for each band

Add the printer to the proper SSID (network) when using "Add a Printer" in HP Smart

and / or

The HP Smart App current version is 7.x - if you have not done so, consider

  • Remove the HP Smart App from your iOS device
  • Shut the device off for a couple of minutes (or as long as you can stand it)
  • Switch on the device > open the Apple Store > find and download a new copy of the HP Smart software

If the app cannot see the printer at all, something else is going on.  For example, if only the iOS device is losing the connection, is different than if the printer is falling off the network.

If the iOS device is losing the connection to the printer, and that printer is still on your network, it might be that the device is not able to maintain contact with the wireless network to which the printer is connected.

Or, yes, it could be something else.

What to do?

Consider

  • Log into your network router and check your router logs for possible connection issues.
  • Assign a static IP address to at least the printer, and ideally, to all your network devices.
  • Update the HP Smart App on your iOS device (Remove app, restart the device, get a new copy of the app)
  • Ensure the printer is connected to the proper SSID name and bandwidth speed
