The instructions I get to configure a PPTP VPN for a Chrome Book are as follows:

Chromebooks with the Play Store can connect to PPTP VPN services.
  • At the bottom right, select the time.
  • Select Settings .
  • Scroll down and select Google Play Store.
  • Select Manage Android Preferences.
  • Scroll down and select PPTP VPN.
  • In the upper right, select Add .
  • In the box that appears, fill in the info. ...
  • Select Save

Have successfully configured other Chromebooks using these instructions.

Problem:  When attempting this on the HP Chromebook 14 the PPTP VPN selection at step 5 is not available.

Where can I find this option on this particular Chromebook?

@lschweig Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are unable to see the PPTP VPN from The PH Chromebook.

Please follow the below steps and check.

Since PPTP is not a secure VPN protocol, there is very little reason to use a PPTP VPN on Chromebook anyway! If you have a legacy Chromebook and really must use PPTP, the instructions for doing so are almost identical to those below.

1. Sign in to your Chromebook.

2. Click the network icon at the bottom of the screen (next to your picture).

3. Select Settings.

Chromebook L2Tp 0

4. Select Network -> Add connection -> Add private network.

Chromebook Setup 2

5. Fill in the details provided by your VPN service (as noted, these don’t have to be specific to Chrome OS, so you can just use generic ones provided for other platforms).

Click Connect.

Thank you for your response.

I am using a brand new HP Chromebook.

The network to which I am connecting is PPTP VPN, so i will need to connect using that protocol.

Your instructions are fine, but I do not get the "Add a Private Network" option from "Add a Connection".  I have to choose an L2TP protocol and that wont work for me.

I have setup several ACER  Chromebooks that are running the identical version of ChromeOS and the option is available for the PPTP VPN connection.  It is not at the same location as the network setup, but this is where the ChromeOS world instruct susers to go.

Is HP doing something to cover up this connection protocol?

I appreciate any information you can provide that might help.

Thank you for the update.

Is it working fine before?

Please try to reset the factory reset for your Chromebook.

  1. Sign out of your Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
  3. Select Restart.
  4. In the box that appears, select Powerwash and then Continue.
  5. Follow the steps that appear and sign in with your Google Account.
Note: The account you sign in with after you reset your Chromebook will be the owner's account.
  6. Once you've reset your Chromebook:

Have a nice day!!

Again, thank you for your quick response.

No, it has never worked on this particular Chromebook. I have, however set up several other brands of Chromebooks using the same Chrome OS and the following instructions worked perfectly.

For some reason, only the HP Chromebook does not allow me to get to "select PPTP VPN" from the "Manage Android Preferences" selection. I assume its part of the ChromeOS(as it appears on all other brands that I have seen), and therefore HP has moved or blocked it somehow.  Is this the case?  If so, is there a work around to get to that selection?

I am running out of time, because if I cant find a solution, I will have to return the Chromebook as it wont meet my needs.
