I have a dual band wi-fi with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Why does my computer only show the 2.4 GHz wi-fi connection. I have checked and it will support the 802.11n which I understand should be able to connect to the 5GHz. How do I make it do that?

@Codysmom1

Normally you need wifi card which supports 802.11 ac, what is your HP Laptop 15 machine ? From my understanding, HP does not install 802.11n only on HP 15" machines.

Regards.

Hi, @Codysmom1

Some model wifi N adapters work on both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz wifi bands and some only work on the 2.4 GHz wifi band.

It completely depends on the model wifi adapter your notebook has.

How you can tell if your wifi N adapter can connect to both bands...

Go to the device manager.  Click to expand the Network Adapters device manager category.

You will see the name and model number of the wireless network adapter listed there.

Dual band wifi N adapters have suffixes that end in a/b/g/n or a/g/n.

Single band wifi N adapters have suffixes that end in b/g/n.

If you let me know the full model name and number of your notebook's wireless network adapter, I will let you know if it is a single or dual band wifi N adapter.

Hi:

The Realtek RTL8723DE b/g/n wifi adapter is a single band (2.4 GHz only) wifi adapter.

You can upgrade to this model wifi card if you are willing and able to take the notebook apart.

Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11 ac 1x1 WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported) HP part # L17365-005.

You can find this model on eBay, or Ali Express,

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=L17365-005&_sacat=0&_sop=15

The card will have the same 72 MBPS throughput as the RTL8723DE on the 2.4 GHz wifi band, but on the 5.0 GHz wifi band, it will have a max throughput of 433 MBPS when you have an AC router with an excellent wifi signal strength.
