So when I boot up my laptop my mouse functions and works normally. But whenever I start to do a task, it just stops working. The trackpad still works, but the mouse doesn't. I open up device manager but it doesn't show up as a device. Rebooting does nothing. The only temporary fix is to let the laptop sit for a while and the mouse randomly works again until it stops working again. Also in device manager the "I2c HID Device" shows up with a warning signal, which I think might be part of the problem. (The mouse works normally on other computers, and any other usb device also stops working)

Hi @Gamer317,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're experiencing with your mouse and other USB devices not working intermittently on your laptop, coupled with the "I2C HID Device" showing a warning signal in Device Manager, suggests a potential problem with the I2C HID device driver or a USB controller issue. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check for Windows Updates
Ensure your system is fully updated, as updates can fix driver issues.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I.Go to Windows Update: Click on "Windows Update."Check for updates: Click "Check for updates" and install any available updates.
2. Update or Reinstall I2C HID Device Driver
The I2C HID device driver could be causing the issue.
- Open Device Manager: Press Win + X and select "Device Manager."Find the I2C HID Device: Look for the device with the warning symbol.
- Update Driver:
- Right-click the device and select "Update driver."Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."
If updating doesn't work:
- Uninstall the Driver:
- Right-click the device and select "Uninstall device."Check "Delete the driver software for this device" if available, then confirm.
- Reboot the Laptop: Restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
3. Check USB Power Management Settings
- Open Device Manager: Press Win + X and select "Device Manager."
- Find USB Root Hub Devices:
- Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section.Right-click each "USB Root Hub" or similar device and select "Properties."
- Power Management Tab:
- Go to the "Power Management" tab.Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."Click "OK."
4. Disable and Enable the Trackpad in BIOS:
- Restart your laptop and press the designated key (usually F2, F10, Del, or Esc) during startup:
- Look for settings related to the trackpad or internal pointing device.Disable it, save the changes, and restart the laptop.Re-enter BIOS/UEFI, enable the trackpad, save the changes, and restart again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
