My HP laptop is very slow responding to search for files.  When using Outlook with MS 365 it has lately been giving me the message: Contacting the server for information.

Hi @speedy337,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion Gaming - 15 laptop is slow and displaying a message saying "Contacting the server for information," it could indicate several possible issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem.

  • Check your internet connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and working properly. Slow or unstable internet can cause delays in accessing online information.
  • Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches and improve performance. Restart your laptop and see if the issue persists.
  • Disable unnecessary startup programs: Too many programs launching at startup can slow down your system. Disable any unnecessary startup programs to free up system resources. You can manage startup programs through the Task Manager in Windows.
  • Update your drivers: Outdated or incompatible drivers can affect system performance. Visit the HP support website and check if there are any updated drivers available for your laptop model. Install the latest drivers for your hardware components.
  • Scan for malware: Malware infections can significantly impact system performance. Run a thorough scan using your antivirus software to check for any malware or viruses. If you don't have an antivirus program installed, consider installing a reputable one.
  • Clear temporary files and cache: Accumulated temporary files and cached data can slow down your system. Use the Disk Cleanup utility on Windows to remove unnecessary files. You can access this utility by searching for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu.
  • Check for disk errors: Hard drive errors can cause performance issues. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command "chkdsk /f C:" (without quotes). This command will scan and fix any disk errors on your C: drive. Restart your laptop after the scan is complete.
  • Upgrade hardware components: If your laptop continues to perform poorly, you may consider upgrading certain hardware components such as adding more RAM or replacing the hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD). These upgrades can significantly improve system responsiveness.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
