I was on YouTube and then my laptop diconnected from the WiFi. I have restarted the laptop and the router on independent occasions. I have never used an Ethernet cable for my laptop, I use a router that I connect to wirelessly. The troubleshooting keeps telling me my ethernet cable is broken or disconnected.

Hi @DMdB,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your laptop might be experiencing a network configuration issue or a hardware problem with its wireless adapter. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Check Network Adapter Settings:
- Go to the Control Panel on your laptop, select "Network and Internet" > "Network and Sharing Center" > "Change adapter settings."
- Right-click on your wireless network adapter and select "Enable" if it's disabled. If it's already enabled, right-click and select "Disable," wait a few seconds, and then right-click and select "Enable" again.
Update Wireless Network Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the "Network adapters" section, find your wireless adapter, right-click on it, and select "Update driver."
- Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software" and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check for Incorrect Network Configuration:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator (right-click on it in the Start menu and select "Run as administrator").
- Type ipconfig /release and press Enter, then type ipconfig /renew and press Enter. This will refresh your IP address.
- Then, type netsh winsock reset and press Enter. This will reset your network socket settings.
- Restart your laptop to apply these changes.
Forget and Reconnect to Your Wi-Fi Network:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
- Click on "Manage known networks," find your network on the list, click on it, and then click "Forget."
- After this, reconnect to your Wi-Fi by selecting it from the list of available networks and entering the password.
Check for Hardware Issues:
- It's possible that your laptop's wireless adapter might be failing. If you have an external USB wireless adapter, you can try using it to see if your laptop connects to the Wi-Fi. If it does, your built-in adapter might need replacement.
Disable Ethernet Adapter Notifications:
- Since you mentioned that the troubleshooter keeps indicating an issue with an Ethernet cable, you might want to disable your Ethernet adapter temporarily to avoid these messages and focus on the wireless issues.
- Go back to "Change adapter settings," right-click on the Ethernet adapter, and select "Disable."
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
