Hi @HIMAbronxville,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It looks like your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is having two issues: the Instant Ink enrollment and connecting to Wi-Fi. Let's address each one step-by-step.
Resolving the Instant Ink Issue
Check Instant Ink Enrollment:
- Log in to your HP Instant Ink account and ensure that your printer is properly enrolled.
- If you are already enrolled and still seeing the message, try removing and reinserting the cartridges.
Unenroll and Reenroll:
- Sometimes, unenrolling and then re-enrolling in HP Instant Ink can resolve the issue.
- You can do this via your HP Instant Ink account.
Finding the 8-Digit PIN for Wi-Fi Connection
The 8-digit PIN is typically found on a sticker on the printer or within the printer's settings. Here's how you can find it:
Check Printer Stickers:
- Look for a sticker on the back or bottom of the printer. It might have the Wi-Fi PIN.
Print Network Configuration Page:
- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button.
- Navigate to the Settings menu and select Print Reports.
- Choose Network Configuration Page. This page often contains the WPS PIN needed for Wi-Fi setup.
Using WPS to Connect to Wi-Fi:
- If your router supports WPS, you can connect your printer without the 8-digit PIN.
- On your printer, press and hold the Wireless button until it starts blinking.
- On your router, press the WPS button. The printer should automatically connect to the network.
Additional Steps for Wi-Fi Connection
Manual Setup:
- On the printer control panel, go to the Wireless settings.
- Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to select your network and enter your Wi-Fi password.

HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app on your smartphone or computer.
- Open the app and select Set up a new printer.
- Follow the instructions to connect your printer to Wi-Fi.
If these steps don't resolve the issues, you may need to perform a factory reset on your printer and start the setup process from scratch:
- Factory Reset:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Navigate to the Settings menu on the printer control panel.
- Select Printer Maintenance or Tools, then Restore or Reset, and finally Restore Factory Defaults.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the Instant Ink issue and connect your printer to Wi-Fi.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
