I have an HP 14-dq2043cl laptop. Recently it began saying No hard drive detected. Took it to a computer store, they said it would cost 500 dollars to repair likely and I cannot afford that. I have multiple self-made documentaries that took me years to create on this computer and need to retrieve them. I am looking for any help possible on this. I have taken off the back of my computer and I can see that my SSD is there and does not look damaged. I don't want to take further steps yet because I have no idea what I am doing. Any help would be so appreciated.

Hi @sumatja1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

First, don't panic; since your SSD is physically undamaged, there may still be options to retrieve your data. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Check Connections

Ensure the SSD is properly connected to the motherboard. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause the system to not recognize the drive. To manually check:

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source.
  • Carefully remove the SSD and reinsert it back into its slot, ensuring it's firmly connected.

2. BIOS Configuration

Check if your BIOS settings are configured to detect the SSD.

  • Turn on your laptop and immediately press F10 repeatedly until you enter BIOS setup.
  • Navigate to the Storage or Boot options to see if your SSD is listed.
  • If available, enable the SSD and save the settings.

3. Boot from External Media

Try accessing the SSD from an external environment:

  • Create a bootable USB drive with a Linux or Windows recovery tool.
  • Boot your laptop from the USB by pressing Esc repeatedly followed by selecting the Boot Device Option (F9).
  • If the OS on the USB drive detects the SSD, you may be able to copy your data to another external drive.

4. SSD to USB Adapter

Consider using an SSD to USB adapter:

  • Remove the SSD from your laptop.
  • Connect the SSD to another computer using an SSD to USB adapter.
  • This should allow you to access the SSD as an external drive and retrieve your data.

Here are steps on how to create a bootable USB drive:

Creating a Bootable USB Drive (Windows)

  1. Download a Windows ISO file from Microsoft's website.
  2. Use software like Rufus to create the bootable USB:
    • Open Rufus.
    • Select the USB drive.
    • Choose the downloaded Windows ISO.
    • Click 'Start' and follow the prompts.

I hope this helps.
