Trying to help a friend out. Tried everything from two guys on youtube, HP virtual  assistant, about driver updates. The  WIFI card adapter is Ralink. Read all through the above and was interested in the external USB wifi adapter, would that work ? Thx

You're very welcome, Steve.

The wifi adapters used in that model connect to a wireless LAN network, not a WWAN (Mobile) network like a cell phone does.

The Half Mini Card (HMC) format is two generations removed from the old mini-PCI wlan cards that were approximately 2 x 3" in size.

After the 2 x3" size Mini-PCI wifi cards, came the mini-PCi express cards which are about twice the size of the HMC cards..

Now they are on to the M.2 2230 form factor wifi cards which are about 1/2" wide and 3/4" long and have very tiny antenna connector terminals.

Hi:

Something like this would work just fine...

TP-Link AC600 USB Wi-Fi Dongle, Dual Band 5 GHz Wireless Adapter for PC, Desktop and Laptop, Support...

Also, if you were inclined to upgrade the internal wifi adapter, this model should work just fine on W10.

Broadcom BCM943228HMB 802.11abgn 2×2 Wi-Fi Adapter, Broadcom Bluetooth4.0 Adapter   HP part # 730668-001

You should be able to find this model wifi adapter on eBay.

730668-001 | eBay

Search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the wifi card removal and replacement procedure...

Paul, thank you for a very concise reply. As I said it's for a friend's PC.

I  remember the Bus cards from long ago they where 2 x3 ", this is modern equivalent.

Just to get my head round how it works, it picks up the home wifi signal and bypasses wifi card in the PC right?

Or does it connect to a mobile network ?

Thx again, Steve
